The fortress of Mystras was built in the 12th century in an effort to control the plains of the Evrotas Valley and soon was captured by the Byzantines.  The transformation of Mystras from fortess to town began shortly afterward when the citizens of medieval Sparta decided to abandon the plains and relocate their town on the slopes below the castle.  Many of the churches have been restored to their former glory and are regarded as some of the finest surviving examples of late Byzantine architecture.
