The island fortress of Monemvasia is often referred to as the "Gibraltar of Greece". It's also known as one of the most romantic towns in Greece, a living museum of Byzantine, Turkish, and Venetian history dating back to the 13th century..The town was founded in the 6th century AD by refugees fleeing Slavic raids into the Peloponnese. It was never captured in battle.
